چکیده

We present high spatial resolution BIHK@-band imaging of a sample of ultralu(FWHMB 0A.3È0A.8) minous infrared galaxies ULIGs) with ““ cool ÏÏ mid-infrared colors (L ir[ 1012 L _ ; ( f25 km/f60 km\ 0.2), which select against active galactic nucleusÈlike (AGN-like) systems, a complementary sample to the ““ warm ÏÏ ULIGs of Surace and coworkers. We Ðnd that all of the cool ULIGs are either advanced mergers or are premergers with evidence for still-separate nuclei with separations greater than 600 pc. Extended tidal features such as tails and loops as well as clustered star formation are observed in most systems. This extended tidal structure suggests a common progenitor geometry for most of the ULIGs : a plunging disk collision where the disks are highly inclined with respect to each other. The underlying host galaxies have H-band luminosities of 1È2.5L *, very similar to that found in the warm ULIGs. The nuclear regions of these galaxies have morphologies and colors characteristic of a recent burst of star formation mixed with hot dust and mildly extinguished by mag ; only in one case (IRAS A V \ 2È5 22491[1808) is there evidence for a compact emission region with colors similar to those ofan extinguished QSO. Most of the observed star-forming knots appear to have very young (10 Myr) ages based on their optical/near-infrared colors. These star-forming knots are insufficiently luminous to typically provide more than 10% of the high bolometric luminosity of the systems. Subject headings : galaxies : active È galaxies : interactions È galaxies : star clusters È galaxies : starburst È infrared : galaxies

High Resolution Tip/Tilt Near-Infrared Imaging of Warm Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies

We present high spatial resolution (FWHM ≈ 0.3–0.5) H (1.6μm) and K (2.1μm) images of a complete sample (12) of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs) chosen to have “warm” mid-infrared colors (f25/f60 > 0.2) known to be characteristic of active galaxies. The extended underlying galaxy is detected in each system at H and K , as are tidal features and many of the star forming knots seen at opti...

Optical/Near-Infrared Imaging of Infrared-Excess Palomar-Green QSOs

Ground-based high spatial-resolution (FWHM < 0.3–0.8) optical and nearinfrared imaging (0.4—2.2 μm) is presented for a complete sample of optically selected Palomar-Green QSOs with far-infrared excesses at least as great as those of “warm” AGN-like ultraluminous infrared galaxies (Lir/Lbig−blue−bump > 0.46). In all cases, the host galaxies of the QSOs were detected and most have discernable two...

Spitzer Mid-Infrared Imaging of Nearby Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies

We have observed 14 nearby (z < 0.16) Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs) with Spitzer at 3.6—24μm. The underlying host galaxies are well-detected, in addition to the luminous nuclear cores. While the spatial resolution of Spitzer is poor, the great sensitivity of the data reveals the underlying galaxy merger remnant, and provides the first look at off-nuclear mid-infrared activity.

The Qso – Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies Connection

For the past several years, our group has pursued a vigorous groundbased program aimed at understanding the nature of ultraluminous infrared galaxies. We recently published the results from a optical/nearinfrared spectroscopic survey of a large statistically complete sample of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (the ”IRAS 1-Jy sample”). We now present the results from our recently completed optica...

Mapping the Evolution of High Redshift Dusty Galaxies with Submillimeter Observations of a Radio-selected Sample

Direct submillimeter imaging has recently revealed the 850 μm background to be mostly composed of a population of distant ultraluminous infrared galaxies, but identifying the optical/near-infrared (NIR) counterparts to these sources has proved difficult due to the poor submillimeter spatial resolution. However, the proportionality of both centimeter and submillimeter data to the star formation ...
